D4. Earth science and Environmental Engineering

Humanity is currently dealing with many environmental problems. They are exacerbated by the sprawl of cities, which is accompanied by the growth of urban population and an increase of elderly people, as well as land use changes. For example, these problems relate to (i) causes and consequences of climate change including global warming and embedded severe heat waves, (ii) urban sprawl, as well as (iii) air and water pollution. They affect organisms such as humans, plants and animals as well as materials and socio-economic sectors. Earth and environmental scientists and engineers are interested in methods and data, which enable impact-related comparative analyses of processes and resulting phenomena that are typical of past and future effects of human environmental activities. They aim at the development and implementation of solutions to a variety of current environmental issues. In the "Earth Science & Environmental Engineering" sessions at EKC 2019, delegates from Europe and Korea will discuss the main issues, core trends and collaboration opportunities in the field of earth science and the environment with experts and key persons from diverse sectors including industry, governments, local authorities, research associations and organizations, as well as academia. The following specific sessions are focused on "Earth Science & Environmental Engineering" at EKC 2019: 1) Adaptation to climate change in cities 2) Current issues of urban air quality 3) Current issues of urban water 4) Waste treatment and management 5) Circular economy and sustainability 6) Current environment-related topics on atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere 7) Poster presentation Through these events, the "Earth Science & Environmental Engineering" group offers delegates a valuable opportunity to create a new network between Europe and Korea.

Synopsis
Plastics have made significant contribution in almost every field of human activity today – agriculture, medical, transportation, piping, electrical and heat insulation, plastic bag and packaging, manufacturing of household and electronic goods, furniture and other items of daily or specific use. Plastics are composed of a network of molecular monomers bound together to form macromolecules. Currently plastics are well collected and recycled in the world. However, there are increasing concerns due to non-degradability and generation of toxic gases on combustion during incineration. About 10% of the plastic we use yearly end up in the ocean. That’s equivalent to 700 billion plastic bottles. Also illegal plastic waste exportation from developed countries to developing countries is one the recent big problems on plastic waste. Therefore it is required sustainable plastic waste treatment solutions, assessments and, methodologies and management. The purpose of this session is to develop better understanding tools to predict future trends and propose/discuss appropriate sustainable solutions. The specific topics include; - Sustainable plastic waste treatment - Plastic type and their treatment and management - Exporting and importing plastic waste - Plastic recycling and upcycling - Material flow analysis of plastic waste - Energy recovery from plastic waste - Resource economy - Assessment tools and methods (life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, resource efficiency, carbon footprint and water footprint etc.)

Synopsis
Climate change is considered one of the most serious threats to global sustainable development. Many studies show that many natural disasters afflicting the world are related to severe weather and extreme climate change events. Impacts of global climate change are expected in environment, food security, human health, natural resources, and economic activities. Therefore, currently many international cooperation projects and studies are conducted to figure out these problems. In this session, Green Technology Center (GTC) which was established in 2013 as a policy research center specializing in climate technology in South Korea and KIGAM (focusing on (1) Climate Change Mitigation & Sustainability (2) Geological Survey (3) Mineral Resources Research (4) Petroleum and Marine Research and (5) Geologic Environment Research) will discuss about - Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management - Technology development and transfer, including infrastructure. - Climate Change Issues for natural system (Air pollution, Water Sector, land use change, biodiversity and ecosystem) - Future technologies and cooperation opportunities for global climate change (including developing countries) - Technology policy research related with climate change in Europe and Korea - Potential research idea for an EU-Korea project

Synopsis
Urban planning in many cities currently faces the challenge to react to the following significant changes: (i) increasing severe summer heat due to the regional climate change, (ii) increase of urban population, (iii) demographic change, i.e. increase of the proportion of elderly people, and (iv) provision of affordable housing. As the design of many cities and their population are not adapted to severe heat, an increase of negative impacts on well-being, efficiency and health of the urban population is to be expected, particularly on consecutive days with human heat stress. In order to mitigate the severe urban heat under a long perspective, urban planning aims at the promotion of green infrastructure to enhance the thermal environment. As a natural-based solution, green infrastructure is one of the most effective planning measures to reduce the daytime heat input into urban spaces. Various urban green areas such as parks, public or private gardens and street trees provide multiple benefits for the adaptation to climate change and thus improving human health and quality of life. In this context, the session will provide an excellent opportunity for dealing with the current issues on urban green infrastructure against the background of climate change. It focuses on bringing together urban meteorologists, urban planners, architects, academic researchers and students from around the world to present and discuss innovative approaches for a better and more thermally comfortable urban environment. The session topics may address the following themes, but they do not have to be exclusively related to them: - analysis of severe heat due to the regional climate change - urban green techniques to reduce severe heat impacts on the urban population - urban heat adaptation strategies on the basis of green infrastructure

Synopsis
Our life is often exposed to environment surrounding hazardous substances, materials, chemicals gases. For instance, the fine particulate matters occurred from mainly combustion in industry and road transport effect to human respiratory health, the interest and importance are getting increased. Particulate matter (PM), also known as particle pollution, is a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets that get into the air. This complex mixture contains for instance dust, pollen, soot, smoke, and liquid droplets. Therefore it is very important to develop sensing technologies to get the PM data as well as to have more good quality data and monitoring.
