Synopsis
The session aims to introduce the general status of the small-scale farms in developing countries and what should be considered in adopting innovations for the farmers in improving the livelihood of the household. Two development workers will be presenting their research works based on their field experience in Madagascar and Myanmar. Presentation 1. Introduction of how bio-ecological farm model “FarmDESIGN” can be innovatively utilized in improving the livelihood of the small-scale farmers in developing countries by analyzing and exploring alternative farming systems using the case study conducted for the small-scale farmers in Madagascar. The FarmDESIGN model was developed for evaluating productive, economic and environmental farm performance using various input data collected from the farm survey to generate alternative farming systems through multi-objective optimization process (Groot et al., 2012). It is a product and the main tool of the Farming Systems Ecology (FSE) group of Wageningen UR currently being applied in various agricultural researches in developing countries. Presentation 2. Improving women farmers' access to productive assets and services has been much discussed as one of the top priorities in achieving food security and poverty reduction, which requires more customised and gender-responsive innovations and technologies. While there is abundant discussion upon gender-responsive innovations, there is a large research gap in to what extent agricultural innovations are gender-responsive in policy and programmes in developing countries and what types of innovations are readily available for women farmers in practice. This session will provide opportunities for both social and natural/engineering scientists to identify research agendas in gender-responsive agricultural innovations and open up a more interdisciplinary platform to collaborate and contribute to improving and empowering rural women.
